Product Description

This bundle pairs A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), Sixth Edition, with the Agile Practice Guide, both published by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in paperback, the two references PMP candidates have traditionally studied together.

The PMBOK Guide Sixth Edition is the process-based edition: 49 processes across five process groups and ten knowledge areas, each with inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs. The Agile Practice Guide, developed by PMI with the Agile Alliance, covers agile principles, Scrum, Kanban, XP and hybrid approaches, and how to tailor delivery to the project. PMI designed the two to be read side by side, and the Agile Practice Guide was originally shipped with the sixth edition for that reason.

What's included

  • A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), Sixth Edition, PMI, paperback
  • Agile Practice Guide, PMI and Agile Alliance, paperback
  • Sixth edition content: five process groups, ten knowledge areas, 49 processes, plus The Standard for Project Management
  • Agile Practice Guide content: life cycle selection, agile frameworks, team roles and organizational considerations

Who it's for

PMP and CAPM candidates whose prep course or question bank is built on the sixth edition process framework. PMI-ACP candidates who need the Agile Practice Guide. Project managers in organizations that still structure their methodology around the sixth edition knowledge areas, and instructors teaching a process-based project management course.

Why this set

PMI has since published the PMBOK Guide Seventh Edition, which is principle-based rather than process-based. The sixth edition is not the newest, but a large share of PMP prep material, corporate methodologies and university courses still teach the process groups and knowledge areas it defines, and the PMP exam itself draws on multiple references including the Agile Practice Guide. Many candidates keep both the sixth and seventh editions for that reason.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PMBOK Guide 6th edition still relevant for the PMP exam?

Yes, in practice. The PMP exam follows PMI's Exam Content Outline and is not tied to a single edition, and much of its predictive-approach content maps to the sixth edition's processes.

Do I need the Agile Practice Guide as well as the PMBOK Guide?

About half of the current PMP exam covers agile and hybrid approaches, which the Agile Practice Guide addresses and the sixth edition PMBOK Guide only touches on.

Are these PMI editions?

Yes. Both books are Project Management Institute publications.
